A Honeymoon Adventure Through Riemvasmaak, the West Coast, Garies and the Orange River
Some honeymoons are about luxury hotels, room service and spending a week next to a swimming pool. Others are about loading the vehicle, pointing it towards the horizon and discovering just how beautiful South Africa can be when you leave the busy roads behind.
Our 2025 honeymoon was definitely the second kind.
Our journey took us through Riemvasmaak, the West Coast, Garies and the Orange River, combining remote landscapes, gravel roads, camping, spectacular scenery and the freedom that comes with travelling through some of South Africa's quieter corners. The trip became much more than simply a honeymoon. It was an adventure and an opportunity to explore the country together.
Into the Wide-Open Spaces
One of the things that immediately stands out when travelling through this part of South Africa is the scale of the landscape.
The towns become smaller, the roads become quieter and the distances between destinations seem to grow. Before long, mountains, rocky plains and enormous skies replace the familiar scenery of everyday life.
This is exactly what makes a road trip through the Northern Cape and West Coast so special.
There is something incredibly rewarding about travelling through areas where the journey itself becomes part of the destination. Every gravel road, mountain pass and unexpected viewpoint gives you another reason to stop, look around and appreciate where you are.
The Rugged Beauty of Riemvasmaak
Riemvasmaak is the kind of destination that reminds you just how diverse South Africa's landscapes really are.
Surrounded by dramatic mountains and rugged terrain, the area feels wonderfully remote. The rocky landscape and vast open spaces create the perfect environment for travellers who enjoy exploring beyond the usual tourist routes.
It is also exactly the sort of destination where having a capable vehicle and the right outdoor equipment allows you to experience places that would otherwise remain hidden on a map.
There are no traffic jams or crowded shopping centres out here.
Instead, there is dust, rock, silence and an enormous landscape waiting to be explored.
And that is precisely the appeal.
Heading Towards the West Coast
From the dry interior, the journey continued towards South Africa's West Coast.
Few road trips demonstrate the contrast in South African scenery quite as well as travelling from the rugged Northern Cape towards the Atlantic Ocean. The environment gradually changes, but the feeling of space remains.
The West Coast has its own personality.
It is raw, windswept and beautiful.
Small coastal communities, long stretches of road and the cold Atlantic create a completely different atmosphere from the interior. It is a landscape that encourages you to slow down rather than rush from one attraction to another.
Sometimes the best part of travelling is simply finding a quiet place, setting up camp and watching the sun disappear over the horizon.
Through Garies and Namaqualand
The journey also took us through Garies, one of the small towns that travellers encounter while exploring Namaqualand and the Northern Cape.
Places like Garies are an important part of a road trip.
They are opportunities to refuel, restock and prepare for the next section of the journey, but they also remind you that travelling through South Africa isn't only about famous destinations.
The small towns, roadside stops and conversations along the way often become part of the memories.
Namaqualand is particularly famous for its dramatic landscapes. Depending on the season, the region can appear dry and almost otherworldly or transform with spectacular displays of wildflowers.
Either way, the enormous skies and distant mountains make it fantastic road-trip country.
Following the Adventure to the Orange River
Eventually, the journey brought us towards another remarkable South African landmark: the Orange River.
After travelling through dry and rocky landscapes, reaching the river creates an incredible contrast.
Water cuts through an environment that can otherwise appear harsh and unforgiving, creating pockets of greenery and life along its banks.
For travellers, the Orange River is also the perfect place to slow down after days on the road.
Set up camp, unpack the chairs and enjoy the view.
After kilometres of driving and exploring, sometimes the greatest luxury is simply having nowhere else you need to be.
Why Overlanding Makes a Honeymoon Special
An overlanding honeymoon probably isn't everyone's idea of romance.
There are dusty roads. There is equipment to unpack. There are campsites to set up and meals to prepare.
But that is also exactly what makes it memorable.
Travelling together means solving problems together, discovering new places together and sharing experiences that cannot be recreated inside a hotel room.
A beautiful campsite becomes your accommodation.

And your vehicle carries almost everything you need for the journey.

Sometimes you simply need a reliable vehicle, the right equipment, a destination on the map and enough curiosity to take the road less travelled.
From the rugged mountains of Riemvasmaak to the open landscapes around Garies, the wild West Coast and the banks of the Orange River, this honeymoon gave us exactly what we were looking for:
